"dug out" by a Shell this evening. I have been under heavy shell fire nearly all day. Heavy musketry fire going on tonight. May 6th Very fine morning. Enemy just commenced to shell beach. 7 a.m. later enemy heavily shelled on right & one gun got a bad time. Capt. LESLIE 7th Batt. badly hit & died a few hours afterwards in Ships Hospl. Spent nearly all day finding "better" positions for BROWNS & PHILLIPS guns. Smell from dead very bad in places numerous bodies chiefly Turks within few feet of Trenches but fire too hot day & night to admit burying parties to go out. Friday May 7 Beautiful [Page] 19
