cold fine morning. There were many casualties in men & lots of horses & mules killed in yesterdays fire along Beach.. Both Brown & Phillips got it bad this morning. Several casualties - one of Phillips men killed by earth falling on him in his dug out. Men delve too far into sides of trenches. I was nearly killed by a shell bursting on crest of trench in Phillips Obst Station in which with Anderson I was sheltering, the concussion seemed to affect my back & spine. I told G.O.C. about it & he wanted me to go to rest ship for a day which of course I declined to do. Sat May 8. Just made my usual tour 20
