my rounds - from HUGHES Batty to through fire trenches to H.Qs. 1st. Infty. Bde. My people are all in Good Spirits (so are the Infantry) I think the Aust. Gunners did well yesterday. I had a great deal of worry & trouble trying to get the N.Z. Art. on the Targets within their Zones especially LONSOME PINE & JOHNSTONS JOLLY, really it is nothing to do with me. I cannot control them but I seem to be held responsible in a measure for putting them on their Targets & observing for them - Even now they are doing no good but appear to be dropping Shell into our own trenches. I think it would be much better if the Bgdr. Gen C.R.A. allotted Zones & tasks to the N.Z. & Aust. Arty & we should know definately then where our [Page] 38
