8. Div Art. Comd not being with G.O.C. (I wanted to go to Div H.Qs. but Gen Bridges considered it unnecessary & refused my Bde Major accomodation) I gave in my opinion satisfactory explanations to all the points & Gen C. Owen asked me to take no notice of what White had said. he said this sort of thing always occurred on active service. I afterwards saw Col. White, he in answer to my challenge could not bring any specific charge of neglect of duty, want of skill or failure. he could only say I was not severe enough on my Officers in enforcing my orders, that he had found an Officer "Crocker" who didn't know enemys trenches from our own, & had found Gun [Page] 43
