We are unanimously of opinion that except perhaps for [...] a better system for observing from SYMONS Batty * the only remedy is Howitzers & I have again requested now in writing dated 29th May that the 5" Howitzer & amm should be cabled for from Aust. The N.Z. Howitzer can do little owing to lack of ammunition. The 6" Howz. are in many respects unsuitable, & the Fitzes? as with H.E. are unsuitable (delay Action) May 29th Enemy exploded a mine in QUINNS post at 3.20 a.m. & then attacked & took it but was driven out afterwards with the bayonets. musketry & M. G. fire very severe. We fired over 250 rounds before breakfast. Two Guns- one 8th one 4th Bde out of Action. Lieut Sidhall & Driver killed. Later in the day Enemy fired 83 rounds of 6" Howitzer shells against our Right - but only succeeded in killing 5 Infy soldiers.
