early in the morning. May 30th Usual rounds finishing with visit to Col. SMYTHE new commdr of No. 2 Sect. who informed me he was getting all he req'd from the Arty & had suffered very little from Enemy Art fire. I saw F.O.O. from SYMONS (N.Z. Artly) in Infy trenches & found that this Batty could engage Enemys Guns in LONE PINE NOTE returning by SHRAPNELL valley at 1 p.m. I noticed PHILLIPS Battery under very heavy shell fire from enemy Batteries. PHILLIPS had been ordered to support the N.Z. Batteries on an attack on the CHESS BOARD trenches & immediately drew fire as usual from himself all round. CADDY however came to his assistance. PHILLIPS had a Bomb killed, a gunner severely wounded & a gun knocked out. The work he has done with this Battery has been uniformly good & I intend to mention him in this action through the skilful siting of his Battery & entrenchment of his guns his losses have been small while he must have inflicted severe losses on the enemy.
