So far the only complaints are of the delay in delivery of mails & non delivery of parcels. visited BURGESS Observation Station. Inspected new work for 4"- 7 & gave directions for Roof etc. Inspect 6" Howitzer No 1 [ ]. Lt. Hughes HALLET (?). Arranged new positions for 5" Howitzer in SHELL GULLEY. Met Bgd. Gen R. A.[ ] & Lt. Col JOHNSTON (?) 5" Howitzer Bde & arranged to show him round the position etc he will be under my command. July 16th Inspected 4"- 7" Empl. BROWNS JOPPS - PHILLIPS - STEWARTS 5" H. Brgs visited BURGESS & BROWNES OBSn Stations. Inspected alternative Gun Empl on No 2 Sect. ARTILLERY Rd Showed Lt. Col. JOHNSTON (HOPE) & Maj GREIGSON one his B.Cs. over right of our position indicating Targets & positions for Observation. July 17th Very hot. Inspected 4"- 7" Batty - 5" Howz. Batty gave inst[...] about placing Ammunition for the Batty & moving Sect over to Hillside S of SHELL GULLEY. Shell burst in No 1 Empl. BROWNS Baty & killed Grs Carter & Lennard & severely wounded Sergt Taylor.X July 18th Sunday. 12 weeks since we landed.
