awful to [?]. the flies worry one also very much. 'X' I should mention the enemy set fire to a lot of our 18pd Amm on the Beach the other day, but fortunately it was soon put out. it only shows however what might happen. We are accumulating vast quantities of Amm & stores I hope for the forward move. Augst 1st Sunday again & the 14th week since we landed. Very well organized attack last night opposite TASMANIAN POST. 11th Bde took about 100 yds of enemy trenches. The Artillery cooperation both Howitzer & field Gun was excellent & the Infy very pleased with it. Tauber came over yesterday morning & dropped 2 bombs & a lot of arrows but did no harm. Another one came over this afternoon. The new quarters at the head of ANZAC Gulley are a great success much nicer. 'X' My name appeared in Div Orders as Bgder Gen while comg Aust div Arty to date from Augst 15 1914. (date Div Order July 29) & on July 31 Mervyn was gazetted 2nd Lieut to date from July 20th. 'X' As showing the trying conditions of this place, Capt Rogers 8th Bty was coming down from Batty with his Batman the other night 81
