his batman stumbled & fell & it was then found he had been shot thro the heart. Col Rosenthal was shot [ ] in the leg also at night on his way to me while chatting outside 3rd F. Amb. in a place considered quite safe during the day. These of course are chance bullets but they can kill all the same. The shelling by the Enemy still continues day by day. he is firing 12" bomb shell from an old mortar. Shell loaded with H.E. they make a mess of people when they burst near them & a terrific report. Augst 4th The anniversary of the declaration of war between ourselves & Germany. I have been engaged a good deal this last two or three days in preparing dispositions of Guns & Targets for the forthcoming attack on LONE [ ] PINE Works & probably JOHNSTONS JOLLY which we believe to be the forerunner of much more important developments & the beginning of the end so far as the Turk is concerned. Our men are very hopeful & eager to get at the enemy. Our preparations I think are as complete as they can be & we are very hopeful of success. The enemy Aeroplanes have been pretty daring this last few 82
