days, bomb dropping & also dropping arrows. Last night we were landing Troops & the enemy shelled the pier intermittently. We replied on his OLIVE GROVE Guns with I think pretty good effect. We leave our new quarters which we have found so pleasant tomorrow morning for 1st Infy. Bd. H.Qs. rather a shelly place I fear. We commenced on preliminary bombardment today & continue now for 3 days, on the 3rd day comes the assault. [ ]Augst 6th The bombardment today was very effective. I personally superintended [ ] cutting away the wire myself using the 1st N. Z. F Battery. it was difficult but proved to be effective. The bombardment also proved by what was seen after we captured the work to be very effectual. At 4/30 to 5/30 p.m. the intense bombardment took place prior to the assault by the 1st Infy. Bde. 'X' I shall always remember the calm resolute faces of those splendid men of N.S.W. patiently waiting for the time to go so many of them to their death. they sat & joked or read in the Saps & trenches leading to the point of assault on the LONE PINE with their entrenching tools, sand bags ladders etc. determined to succeed. 83
