to discuss matters of Training etc with G.O.C. Bgd Gen McGregor. (I also saw Col CLEEVES Camps Commd ZARIEH) in connection with reinforcements & how they should come on to ANZAC. I have arranged with Gen McGregor that Col Timbridge should exercise supreme control over all Artillery Units in Egypt as far as possible without interfering with present administration arrangements. The G.O.C. (Egypt) was very pleased about this. I found my own people & the Horses in a very satisfactory condition. I addressed the men at both inspections specially emphasiziing that desertion in future will be severely dealt with. There appears to me to be great numbers of men & Officers with apparently nothing to do in 'Alex' who ought to be at the front. The M. authorities seem to make it very difficult for Officers to return once once they get into Hospt. I know I had no end of trouble in getting back, & I could easily have stayed a month there. I was very well looked after at the Hospital & feel I was much better off than in an Hotel (I only had one meal out of Hospt lunch on 31st Augst) at Majestic Hotel & on the following day lunch at Mess at MUSTAPHA, our Base H.Q.S 99
