Nov. 10th. - H.M. Hosp SHIP NEURALIA. It is a long time since I made an entry - first I was too busy then too ill - I carried on the command of the 1st Aust Div until 6.30 p.m. Sunday Nov. 7th when Bgd Gen Chayval took over the command. Bgd Gen White rang me up to tell me that Gen Birdwood desired him to say that it was owing to [ ]lack of confidence in me, but owing to Gen WALKER having been invalided to England it was necessary as prearranged with Australian Govt, to appoint Gen. CHAUVAL he too being the Senior Officer. I have absolutely no grievance. I could not on account of my health have carried on any longer. I was not the next Senior Australian Officer by at least three, but I am proud & happy to have had the honour of commanding this distinguished Division for nearly 1 month & to have given satisfaction, besides commanding the Div. Artillery which was doing duty for both the 1st & 2nd Divisions. The following are some of the things I have been responsible for on my own initiative while acting as Div. Commander. 1. A proper sanitary system & disposal of night soil, etc. for the forthcoming Winter doing away with the absurd idea of 113
