tonight there is a very heavy cannonade going on. We have not been so busy to day - fine - July 27th (fine day) 1st Aust D.H.Q. handed over to 2nd Div at 9 a.m. this morning & with the exception of Art - went into rest. The Div Art 1st Bn have been reinforced by 2 Bdes of 2nd Div all under my control. It has been a much quieter day but many false alarms of attack 'X' & just now, Working parties of our men were fired on by our Guns & machine Guns owing to another Bde reporting them as an enemy attack. July 28th Have issued the orders after a good many alterations by various authorities for tonight's operations - I do so hope it will succeed it will then give us the Ridge that will dominate a large area of country to the N. The bombardment by our own heavy guns is severe tonight - I have now been working in this din for a week, but if everything goes well hope to get out tomorrow, my Gunners are pretty well done the strain of the weeks fighting night & day is very severe. 'X' The men in fact all ranks of the M.T. MORTAR Batts have fought splendidly 3 of them lost their lives carrying up ammunition last Sunday night, to the mortar & on Sunday, 3 were killed & 2 very seriously wounded in keeping their mortar in action on the night of 21-22 inst - but they blew up a cottage where the enemy had formed a strong point & 12 dead alone were found in it afterwards.
