I have had in France. It has been a lovely warm sunny day & is a tremendous relief after the Strain of the past 14 days. Augst 1st ST LEGER. Attended a conference at D.H.Q. this morning when lessons derived from the POZIERES operations were discussed. 'X' I am satisfied from what Infy Bgdes say that our barrages were very good & clean & that the Infantry could get to within 50 yds of them. 1st & 2nd F. Art Bdes arrived from VADENCOORT & bivouacked here. fine day but hot. Augst 2nd ST LEGER. (fine (hot) day) Inspected 1st & 2nd F. Art Bdes in bivouac - Inspected field obtained for drill & manouvre. 5.30 p.m. G.O.C. inspected & addressed Trench Mortar Batts - 'X' Men I most admire are those of good birth & education well brought up with every comfort & men who have left professional businesses, wife & children to serve in the ranks to rub Shoulders with often the lowest classes to endure their foul language & disgusting habits. Augst 3rd Inspecting 1st & 2nd F. Art Bdes in Bivouac & Batteries at Drill & Laying morning & afternoon at Ordnance at CARNAPLES. At H.Q.-D.A.C. MONTRELET to see that all was right there. Inspected 37 O.R. reinforcements from Bde for Batteries. (fine) Aug 4th Same as yesterday for F. Art Bdes & Batteries. Inspected [Page] 74
