Saw Col Wisdom on the way met Mervyn at TILQUES at Div H.Qs. had lunch with Div Art H.Qs at POLINCOVE very pretty country round here & not far to CALAIS. Oct. 19. ABEELE - In Office all day except the usual walk with 'X' Gen LOTBINIERE Col Manifold & Col Austin - after tea which I much enjoy - 'X' I am not too cheery today, the news from the Somme is not to reassuring & the papers are not over optimistic about the Eastern front - if the Germans & Austrians run over Rumania its going to put us back at least 6 mns. its very wet & cheerless today. Oct. 20th Beautiful day better news in paper of Rumania. - Went around to Div Art H.Qs of 2nd, 4th & 47th Divs to see that arrangements for relief & taking over were going on all right. Archbishop of Perth left yesterday Archbishop Clunes came today. Gen White told me yesterday I cannot get back to my command before 31st inst bad luck - Oct. 22nd Yesterday & today have been very fine bright days, nights cold & frosty. Archbishop Clunes who is visiting here is messing with us. - Although there is little to do it is difficult to get out of the office much. I long to get back to my own command.
