Went to FLESSELLS. Saw attack & Aeroplane cooperation, fairly successful. In afternoon at bombing School under Lieut Keane (good Officer) at VIGNACOURT. Then went to St VAST & inspected men in billets of 56th & 58th Bn, fairly satisfactory. Jany 12th. Wet and Snow. Visited Div Rest Station at OLDENCOURT, Saw Col. SHEPHEARD Officer in Charge & Capt. IRVING - Visited bombing School. Jany 13th. To FLESSELLS to see attack exercise by 2 Bns 14th Bde (53, 54th) with aeroplane co operation - only fairly successful - no contact est. with aeroplanes. Went to Infty Div. School at MONTONVILLERS - Saw Lieut Thompson there on whom Commd. had made an adverse report. day Wet - Snow & Sleet - Jany 14th. Sunday. Snow & rain to noon. Left VIGNACOURT for RIBEMONT at 9.30 a.m. passing through AMIENS visited the beautiful Cathedral with as much of the most valuable work, protected by Sandbags against German bombs. Called at 1st Anzac had interview with B.G.G.S.1st Anzac. Arrived at RIBEMONT where our H.Q. opened today at 11 a.m. Jany 15th. Fine day but hazy. Went to FRICOURT CHATEAU, found Gen. Elliott Comd 15th Inf. Bde laid up with a cold - Went to H.Q.s 2nd Div. at BERNAFY WOOD. Saw Gen. Smyth's Cove Div found little difference in condition of things Since we were in the line. Jany 16th. Gen Birdwood called to see me. told me (oh joy) my leave would be alright for the 24th inst. at Chateau HEILLY to Tea Jany 17. - Snow & Sleet. Ground covered with 4" Snow this morning. - [Page] 100
