Jany 22nd. Very busy morning preparing notes & instructions for Staff during my absence on leave. Gen. Birdwood came in during the morning & concurred with my view that the proposed attack on the Salient held by the enemy on our extreme left should be conducted by one Div or the other instead of as a joint operation. I promised to fix it up with Gen Holmes Comdr 4th Aust Div before I left. Gen. Tivey came down at 12 p.m. & I explained everything & handed over to him at 1 p.m. left at 2.10 p.m. with Mervyn & in a Snowstorm. Called at POMMIERE REDOUBT on the way down & explained my views to Gen Holmes about attack above mentioned. Gen Holmes agreed & said he was quite ready & willing to take sole responsibility. Called on B.G.G.S. at HEILLY. gave him copy of notes & Instrs left with my Staff, explained about what I had done with Gen Holmes in connection with propsd attack, he agreed that it was the best thing to do, & promised to call down & see Holmes. left for Boulogne Mervyn with me at 4.20 pm [Page] 102
