Feby 3rd 1917 Left Richmond. (Hotel Stuart.) to return from leave to France. Wife Dorothy Athol, Mrs & Miss Digby saw me & Mervyn off by the 12.50 p.m. train ex Charing X beautiful clear frosty day. Got down to Folkestone & on to the Boat only to find after waiting about 3/4 hour it would not go sailing being postponed until 9.30 a.m. tomorrow Sunday morning. Managed to get accommodation at the pavillion Hotel. Went for a walk along the "Leas" with Mervyn. feeling a good deal better than I did about 12 mns ago when I was stuck up here under very similar circumstances when returning to Egypt. Feby 4th Fine cold bright day. We sailed at 9.30 a.m. & I watched the Martello Towers on the Cliff & wondered how much would happen & how long before I should see it again. Very cold but I went down to my cabin. Arrived at Boulogne at about 11.15 a.m. Nickolay was there with the car. We had some Coffee & Rolls at the Quay Buffet, picked up Capt Wellington at the Hotel de Paris & after a very enjoyable ride through the partially snow covered country arrived at D.H.Q. Bernafy Woods at 5.30 p.m. Took over from Gen Tovey at 6 p.m. found everything O.K. & everybody seemed D.H.Q 1 [Page] 1
