parties on the BAPAUME - CAMBRAI Rd. (The Pioneers at Crater & 29th Bn) & the 32nd Bn on the GREVILLERS Rd. Apl. 10th Ground covered with snow early in morning. Squalls of snow & sleet all day. very cold wind Inspected entrenchments being prepared by the 15th Infy Bde on 2 corps line in front of VILLER AU FLOS. Work & siting satisfactory but no wiring yet done. G.S.O.1 & B.M. 15th Bde. accompanied me. At 11 pm. got message to the effect that we had captured X 11000 Boches & over 100 guns. that Cavalry Div were on line MUNCHY CROISILLES X (at ARRAS show) Apl. 11th Hard frost. bright morning. The 4th Aust Div very early this morning pierced the HINDENBERG LINES just E of BULLECOURT they were assisted by 12 Tanks. at first things went alright some of the men got as far as HENDECOURT WOOD. The enemy however successfully counter attacked from CAGNICOURT & owing to BULLECOURT not having been taken our men were forced back to their own lines with I fear heavy losses. 300 have been taken prisoners. so it is reported. Our 15th Infy Bde was ordered up as a Reserve but not used. I inspected the 29th & 32nd Bns employed on Road work this morning (with C.R.E) & also 2 Corps of 5th Pioneers. the work was progressing satisfactorily Commenced to snow heavily about 3 p.m. & kept on until at least 11 p.m. the night was very [Page] 31
