C.R.As. 4th & 5th Div. & G.O.C. 4th Aust Div. plans etc for forthcoming operations discussed all including Order considered satisfactory. At 3.15 Army Comdr. Gen PLUMER called to see plan for Attack. also Gen McLAGANS Comg. 4th Aust Div. he was quite satisfied with our arrangements. Maj Gen HARRINGTON M.G. 2nd Army also called earlier in Afternoon. Sept. 25th fine day. 'X' 'X' 'X' At 7.am started for HOOGE to see G.Os.C. 14 & 15th Infy Bdes to give them final instructions etc Stopped car on MENIN Rd just as a poor Aust. Soldier had the half of his head & face blown off by a shell fragment (Gen TIVEY & Maj KING - G.S.O.2 with me) A frightful bombardment was going by our own Batteries astride the Menin Rd & the Bosche was barraging the Rd. I stopped numerous convoys & cars & men from going to almost certain death. Dumps were going up in all directions. Motor lorries & cars burning along the Rd broken down wagons dead men & Horses. - I tried to get on but after going on for about 500 yds found the Road completely blocked I hesitated & then decided to go back. 3 minutes after a lorry full of ammunition just ahead of where I stopped blew up with a tremendous explosion. a very narrow escape indeed. Got back about 10 & sent my instructions later by S.D.R in writing. Corps Comdr. came to see me to see how things were going [Page] 104
