to Melbourne, & he did me loyally & well. In morning went to 8th Infy Bde H.Qs. near KIT KAT they are not badly off, & are in a Bosche pill box. - Very fatigueing journey out there, & a good deal of shelling all the time. Got back about 1 pm gave necessary directions to Gen TIVEY about thinning the line etc. Gen Godley called to see me Went to see G.O.C. 4th Aust Div to see if I could help them in tomorrows stunt. (I am already guarding the front to some extent with M. Gun fire Also sent G.S.O.1 to G.O.C. 3rd Aust Div to see if we could help. Oct. 12th Wet miserable day. The 5th & part of the 2nd Army attacked to day (sic) at 5.20 a.m Our 4th Div protected the right of the 3rd Aust. Div on the left were the New Zealanders. The 4th & 3rd nearly got the blue line (there were 3 steps) Red blue & Green) but owing to the the N.Z. Div not being able to get on the 2 others had to fall back ultimately to their jumping off line, but afterwards they went forward again well towards the Red line. The objective of the 3rd Aust Div was PASSCHENDAELE a total advance of over 2000 yds. [Page] 116
