Sir Joseph John Talbot Hobbs personal diaries, Vol. III. (3 February 1917 to 9 May 1918)
Oct. 27th Fine day. Had a fine moonlight night, which enabled the Bosche [sic] to drop bombs with very good effect, I fear from his point of view. 'X' A H.V. shell also got into the 8th Coy. Engineers, & killed 10 & wound 16. 2 more men killed & 2 w. at the Baths, all in YPRES. what slaughter has taken place this last 3 years in this desolated area. The position after yesterdays operations still seems obscure. I dont think we have gained much ground we have 800 prisoners. Bgdr. Gen Wisdom called this afternoon on his way up to for'd Bde H.Qs. Maj. Gen CHICHESTER IInd Army called early this afternoon to see if there was anything he could do for us. The cursed Bosche [sic] is out already to night. 6.15 p.m. bombing, killing & maiming. Oct. 28th Fine but misty & raw. Our relief by the 2nd Div was completed by about 9.pm. last night & I handed over to G.O.C. 2nd Aust Div at 10.a.m. & left for our new D.H.Q. at SCOTTISH LINES, where we are fairly comfortable. In afternoon visited C/Os of the 8th Bde at HALIFAX CAMP rest, clearing & re organization appears to be going on alright. Oct. 29th fine day. last night was moonlight & the Boche availed himself fully of it to send bombing machines over back areas he was quite busy round here.
