Feby. 10th Dull boisterous day, fair visibility To Church parade 59th Bn at KEMMEL Afterwards visited 15th Bde. H.Qs saw Bn Comdr 60th Bn then to H.Qs 14th Bde at REGENTS DUGOUT. Saw L'. GRIEVE 56th Bn who had compaint on being superceded by 3 other Officers am satisfied that that he was not qualified for promotion as Captain. Severely censured L'. COSGROVE 56 Bn for not posting Sentries in the portion of the line which he was defending & for lack of alertness. discussed distribution of M.Gs & defence of left Sub Sector generally with Gen HOBKIRK. Called in at 5th Pioneer Bn H.Qs SPY Fm to see L'. Col CARTER & his camp there. posted letter no 7 to Wife & asked her to cable congratulations to Sir JOHN FORREST. Feby 11th Fine but boisterous, fair visibility posted letter no 8 to Wife & one to Mervyn. In morning General WHITE came to discuss the policy of Machine Gun defence & other matters. he agreed with my views & also on Mobile Artillery for the defence of this Sector. discussion lasted all the morning. In Afternoon went to 8th Bde H.Qs & explained to G.O.C. 8th Infy Bde & Bn Commanders my wishes about patrols, M.G. distribution defence of forward defence systems, Musketry etc. L'. Col. Peck returned from leave. Feby 12th Fine day indifferent visibility. To Meeting of G.O.C. 14th Infy Bde. Battalion Comdrs B.M. F. Coy. Comdr 'X' at Prince Ruperts Dug Outs 'X' to give them instruction in the distribution & employment of Vickers M. Guns defence of the 1st zone in the line, patrolling, Musketry, etc. In Afternoon lectured to 15th Infy. Bde Officers all Bn Comdrs present but G.O.C. Bde. at C.M. - also visited with [Page] 158
