I therefore had to get Artillery to cut wire & make other necessary preparations. (The operation was launched at 11. pm. We succeeded in getting our objection X but the 3rd Aust. Div troops (9th Bde) failed to meet us at K.19.c.5.0. as arranged & we had (29th Bn) to fall back & dig in at K.25.a.1.6. we captured a German S.P. killed 20 Huns & captured 3. May 8th Fine warm day bad vis We expected to be attacked early this morning but it hasent (sic) come off. probably the rain upset the Boche arrangements 10. am. After conversation with Gen MONASH told Gen TIVEY to hold on where he was & to try & join up with 9th Bde tonight at K.19.c.5.0. In Afternoon Attended Domonstration by D.H.Qs. demonstration platoon at 15th Infy. Bde. School at DAOURS. Afterwards inspected School & the arrangements for same. they presented shield to Coy of 57th Bn won at THIEPVAL last July for Rifle competition (Company in Attack) under service conditions. I also addressed the whole parade. G.O.C. 15th Infy. Bde present. X May 9th Fine day, fair vis. In morning to 14th & 8th Infy. Bde H.Qs saw both G.Os.C. told Gen TIVEY to alter breastwork defences to make them real defences & afford cover against attack on River flats. discussed the situation in connection with the posts established by 29th Bn told Gen TIVEY to go no further. Also discussed the advisability of advancing our line in the angle occupied by 31st Bn but after hearing L'. Col. FREEMANS description of the ground & defences gave instructions to remain as we are. In Afternoon saw Gen BIRDWOOD with regard to honors & rewards re- Col. WATSON & general situation. May 10th Fine, but hazy. Quiet night. To 15th Bde. H.Qs saw Gen Elliott. everything satisfactory. visited Tanks. X engaged with Capt. Greenlees & O/C 5th M.G. Bn in finishing the working drawings of HOBBS M.G. Casemate. 198
