In morning proceed to new Div H.Qs. of C. Sector & took over command of my Div in line which had just relieved 2nd Aust. Div. from Bgd. Gen PATON Af. G.O.C. 2nd Aust. Div. command passed at 10 a.m. (afterwards saw CE. Corps re M. G. Casemate etc. In Afternoon visited Bde. H.Qs. of 8th & 15 Bdes at HEILLY arrangements appear satisfactory & all people are getting settled in alright, although a good deal of work must be done & some of the trenches are in filthy condition (on the right of the Sector vacated by 7th Bde) X place shelled while I was there & had I been 3 minutes later in reaching HEILLY I should probably have been "blown out" nearly got it again leaving a shell bursting on the embankment above the Road & Car. Very busy day & busy night going through various papers on crimes & administrative matters with A.A. & Q.M.G. Feeling very seedy good touch of Dog disease which is a sort of "Flue-" very prevalent just now. June 17th Fine but cold. In morning to 14th Infy. Bde. H.Qs. saw G.O.C on various matters & enquired into distribution & states of the Bde. all appeared satisfactory. In Afternoon conference with Corps Comdr & Gen McLagan G.O.C. 4th Div on various matters & policy. Corps Comdr especially desired to know the result of my journey re. of M. G. Casemate. The Boche bombarded part of 8th Bde. Sub Sector at 3.30 a.m. & then attempted to raid it by a party of 50. raid repulsed with heavy loss to enemy. June 18th Beautiful day good vis. To HEILLY (narrowly escaped getting caught in Shell fire) visited 15th & 8th Infy. Bde H.Qs. With Bde Maj 15th Bde visited H.Qs. of all Bns & forward system. met G.O.C. at 59th Bn H.Qs. conditions generally satisfactory. On return to Div H.Qs. met Army Comdr (4th) who called & reported on Hobbs M. G. Casemate & matters in connection with holding the line. [Page] 17
