a hard time & all weary. X Leaves Gen Elliott G.O.C. 14th Bde went on a months leave yesterday & the A.D.M.S. Col. Downey on 14 days same time. Col. Bruche A.A. & Q.M.G. & Maj Woolton G.S.O.II went on 14 days leave each on 4th inst. July 12th Fine day, fair vis. Quiet night. 57th Bn made a raid (1 O. 40 O.R.) on enemy trench elements on our extreme left, but found the Boche had cleared out. The Raid was very well planned & carried out. To DERMICOURT(?) to see Tank demonstration. took Gen Stewart G.O.C. 14th Infy Bde. Arrived at Chateau at BERMICOURT about 10 K. from St. POL met Maj. Gen ELLIS & staff. Gen MONASH was also present. After our excellent lunch saw Mark V Mark V X Tanks manouvering in to operation with aeroplanes & Infantry on a strong point- Also saw Tanks taking up stones 10 tons at a time & towing? up water in drums over trenches & shell torn ground afterwards inspected the fine & important Workshops. Gens. Rawlinson & Birdwood were also present. it was a very instructive & interesting day & enlightened one as to the future possibilites of the Tank. retd to D.H.Q at 7.30 p.m. July 13th Fine day fair vis Quiet night. In morning visited 8th Bde School to see an attack Exercise by Students (fairly well done pointed out faults to Capt. Reid afterwards) 28
