MEADOWS SMITH The object of the mission is both economic & political In afternoon interview with M.G.G.S. IV Army July 20th Generally fine Showers in Afternoon fair vis. Quiet night. To H.Qs. 8th & 14th Infantry Bdes. with reference to proposed offensive operations on Div front. C.R.A. present definate (sic) objectives & plans discussed & approved for submission to Corps. In Afternoon to G.O.C. 58th Division with reference to our proposed operations & seeking their help with Artillery fire. also mentioned the arrangements for instruction of the 58 scouts & patrol work by the Div. July 21st Beautiful day v. good vis In morning met Af G.O.C. 15th Bde & his B. Maj - inspected raiding party on attacking Coys. & as many men as possible of the 57th 58th & 60 Bns & addressed them on the situation & thanked them for their services in the line. I saw in all cases their C/Os Bns in trench system of Franvillers, Bonney & L. Houssoye respectively. 5.30 p.m. recd word from Corps that Art Comdr cannot at present approve of the proposed operations we intended to carry out on the night 24/25, but to get everything in readiness to go on. July 22nd Fine day good vis In morning to see Infantry from 15th Bde under L'. Col Dennsebey? co. operating with Tanks in Attack Exercise at VAUX WOOD. very satisfactory 32
