at 4 p.m. Gen COURAGE & Comg. 5th Tank Bde. with L'. Col. Fairfax Comdg. Mark V[ ] Tanks called to get instructions for employment of these Tanks & also the 12 Armoured Cars allotted to this Div for forthcoming operation. Arrived at new Div H.Qs. in Railway Dug Outs[ ] in Railway Cutting W of VILLERS BRETONNEUX These are very good & very strong Dug Outs but likely to be gassed. they are dry however & very convenient. Augst. 5th Wet nearly all day, bad vis X Conference in morning to give final instructions to Bde Comdrs & others about the operation on the 8th. present all Infy Bgder. & B.M.s except 5th Bde. Major C.R.A. & BM. C.R.E. L'. Cols BRYCE & FAIRFAX Tank Bn Comdr. several Tank Coy Comdrs O/C 5th M.G. Bn O/C 5th Div Signals Coy. G.S.Os.I & II & A.A.& Q.M.G. & A.D.M.S. Conference lasted until 12.45 p.m. In Afternoon with G.S.O.1 to Corps. (Aust.) H.Qs. to be present at conference of IV Army Comdr. Corps Comd. G.O.C. 1st Cav. Div etc. It was decided for 1st Cav. Bn to press through 5th Div Sector if possible to exploit our success. XX Augst. 6th Wet & squally all day bad vis We had quiet night, but the 18th Div that releived (sic) us in the MORLANCOURT Sector last week were attacked this morning & lost all the ground we had gained & a bit more with it. they are really a poor lot & its very discouraging especially at this particular time. Very busy seeing people including the Bgdr. Comdg. 1st Cavalry Bde acting with us Col. CARTER O/C Armoured cars & others with regard to tomorrows 40
