X Saw 1 man yesterday & four today convicted by C.M. for A.W.L & desertion reduced their sentences & recommended suspension. Engaged in honors & rewards lists. X Received word on letter today from my Wife stating that my Father had died on Oct. 11th Oct. 17th Fine day, but gloomy. Visited in Afternoon G.Os.C. 14th & 15th Bdes. Saw O/C 56th Bn. all well. Saw Major Officer in connection with his visit to Artillery (Aust) with American Corps & recd his report. Oct. 18. Beautiful Autumn day. In morning went to parade of the X 29th Bn at RAMBURRELLES (sic- Ramburelles) with G.O.C. 8th Bde to endeavor to induce men to obey orders issued in connection with re organization of the Bde. After hearing the order read ordering them to go to the 32nd Bn I addressed them at considerable length. they were perfectly respectful in every way but all but about 35 refused to obey the order by a passive resistance. I gave them until 3 p.m. to decide & then threatened to stop their pay if they further disobeyed. (Got a favorable report late in the evening that the majority had obeyed.) Afterwards visited 14th Bde. H.Qs & with Gen. Stewart inspected Bde School. Also visited 53rd Bn. H.Qs. & saw L'. Col Cheeseman. Attended conference of Division Chaplains during Afternoon 76
