30.5.15. At 11.40 am recd_ instructions to report to H Qrs No 3 Section, before doing so recd a note from Lieut Kidd, that he + Lt Colpitts had been ordered to make a sortie from Quinns at 1 pm + rush the Turkish trenches about 7 to 10 yds away from ours + reconnoitre their works + take 30 men each. Rushed up to H Qrs + confirmed this + received further information. also recd. instructions to detail a party of officers + 100 others to rush the Turkish trenches tonight at 9 pm. I suggested that I should be permitted at the same time to detail a similar party to rush from Courtneys post, at the same time + capture the Turkish machine guns, on the right of this position, so as to prevent them enfilading the trenches, which it was suggested we should capture + thus make them tenable + at the same time our sortie should be preceded + covered by the fire of all supporting trenches + guns + especially by the Japanese bombs, which was agreed to + ordered. Sent instructions to Major Todd at Bivouack to detail + arrange parties, then climbed to Courtney's post to witness sortie + specially to locate enemy machine gun on right of Courtneys. [Page 16]
