16/6/15 Heavy bombardment commenced early + continued nearly all day - mostly directed on beach General working parties supplied - One under 227 Corpl Mofflin PS - for trenching to connect with secret sap - Started out through secret sap at 9.15 pm - crawled a few yards, was out for some time + returned to bivouack about midnight. Nothing done. Corpl Mofflin shot + his body left out. All private papers + effects returned + about 60 rds of his ammunition + rifle - Held inquiry + reported his death + forwarded statements by ptes Mitchell + others who were of the party - Major Todd + Hon Capt McMasters still away on Duty from the regt + A Squadron left without a single officer - This has been reported, as very unsatisfactory to me + I recommended special case, for promotion of 2 NCOs to commissioned ranks but was refused. Water still a grave difficulty Recd respirators (6) + ordered practice in using Supplied inlaying picquet under Lt Rowan [Page 50]
