[Page 139] Sunday 27th Aug 1916. Abu Hamra. Isolation tent - Specimen of excreta forwarded to BASE to-day for analysis. - Capt Taylor presents me with six (6) cheroots - Chicken & bacon, stewed apples, bread & butter, tea, a bottle of stout then cigars - Ecstasy - bed. Monday 28th Aug 1916. Abu Hamra - isolation - The railway now in course of construction, from KANTARA (SUEZ CANAL) running eastwards, has for its aim, not only protection to the CANAL but a far reaching political one, no doubt. The line will soon reach Bir-el ABD. In my own mind I am convinced that it will be pushed on to EL ARISH which is on the Egyptian side of the border ( ). EL ARISH is now held by the Turks who are utilising it as a base. The main objective of the railway appears quite obvious. That is to link up with the BAGDAD system of lines, drain Palestine & divert trade back through Egypt - The line now under construction in its long [three words crossed out] throughout its length as far as EL ARISH will be under cover of our own naval guns, as it runs parallel with the coast line in range of open waters.
