1838 August Tuesday 14. S. Light Airs & hazy Wr. gentle showers - planting potatoes. Co & Mely [Corporal & Melaney] Wednesday 15. NE. Fine Clear Wr. with Moderate breezes. Many Whales in in the bay. Evaporating [...] Soda. Thursday 16th. NE. Mild clear Wr Mr. Turner brought in his boat from the Eastn Beach in the Bay - Orrick & self sought for the horses & found them near the creek in Hardy's [...] sent them on tether. the Donkey parted company with Orrick after inflicting a kick on his knees. Friday 17th N.E. Moderate & Clear Wr. employed in the Garden. Mr. [...] au jardin des fleurs Mrs McDermott called. Saturday 18. NW. Moderate & Cloudy Wr. drawing wood with the Pony Orrick assg. Mr Green had the dingy with Mr Turner they killed a Swan & some other game which they intend to devour Sunday 19. W. NW. Strong Gales & Cloudy Wr for the greater part of these 24 hours with some heavy showers - after family prayers & a hearty meal I went in search of the Donkey which we left behind on Thursday found him strangled having as I conjecture entangled one of his hinder legs in a bight of his tether rope which so tightened the other parts of the coil round his neck as to cause the fatal effect. Monday 20. NW. Moderate & Cloudy Wr a party arrived from the Vasse for the Medical Officer - - skinned the Donkey & buried him. the fresh turned up earth gave some alarm to the Vasse party who concluded we had a fracas with the natives & had there buried the dead.
