fair though very mild and we glided along almost imperceptibly. Bessy and I had a great deal to do in the arranging way and did not appear upon deck until the shores of the Isle of Wight was fading from the view. Tea succeeded and although there is little in the society here to excite our interest or arrest our taste where all is so kindly intentioned and "so on", it would be wrong to be critical. The transport "the Sylvia" which had got the start of us in the morning was the next object of attraction. There is a bet of £5 depending upon our arrival at Madeira and consequently a degree of amicable rivalry between the Captains till her sails were hoisted and she really looked beautiful but we passed her triumphantly and had the satisfaction of offering her a tow-line.
