another into a little cockle shell of a boat and that upon the bosom of the broad Pacific Ocean. We watched several of the boats in pursuit of a whale which was struck but not taken. Whilst we were on board our party was joined by the commander of an American whaler a Captain Young. It was curious as we all sate together in the cuddy of the French ship to observe the difference between these representatives of the 3 different nations. The American all solidity and judgement the Frenchman all courtesy animation and ease and the Englishman jovial and frank as Captain Rolles is when under the influence of variety and good cheer so there we all sate socially together in the bosom of the Ocean.
