STATEMENT No.6 Tariffs and Import Restrictions. With the exception of Great Britain, the Irish Free State, Belgium, Denmark, Norway and Russia, every European country has a tariff on imported wheat. In some countries the duty is almost prohibitive, for example— In Germany the duty for some time was 6s. 8½d. per bushel, and it was only reduced last month to 5s. 4d. In France the duty is 3s. 6d. per bushel, but it trebled for Australian wheat. In Italy the duty is 3s. 8d. per bushel.

In addition to the import duties, many countries compel millers to use a minimum proportion of native wheat in their mixtures. This proportion varies, and has been as high as 97 per cent. (in France). Except Argentina, all the countries of North and South America have import duties on wheat. In South Africa, formerly an important customer of Western Australia, wheat can only be imported under Government license, and there is also a tariff. Other customers of this State, Japan, Egypt, and Palestine, have tariffs, and India has recently imposed a duty equal to 66 per cent. of the price. Full details of world import duties on grain and its products are available in the Pool Office. A study of these will serve to show that the high prices ruling in the early post-war years led to increased
