coming of the export trade ? — We have the statistics always before us, and being so intimately associated with the sale yard business and the local price of meat, you will see that our State bears favorable comparison with the other States in regard to the local price. It is a question for the growers.

10284. But my inquiry was as to whether your department had made any estimate regarding the export trade. What caused you to start on the work of these extra plants for handling a greater quantity of stock ? — Such movements generally emanate from the district. For instance, the movement for Wyndham has been before the people for years. The increase of lambs is a somewhat spasmodic affair. A reference to these seasons (indicated) will show some more profitable than others. We generally move through some sections of the community or interest drawing attention to a surplus. We build on that. Previous commissions and conferences have moved; the precis of their deliberations are all boiled down into recommendations to the department. We get suggestions from all grades and conditions of settlers and traders. You will note by the Statistical Register how the imports of meat products in some directions remain stationary, and that in sheep and beef the figures are shrinking , being not nearly so large as they were 10 years ago.

10285. Is there anything else you wish to touch upon ? — I do not think so.
