New Norcia, Victoria Plains Western Australia, Jan. 8th. 1912 To the Colonial Secretary, PERTH Dear Sir,- Just a few lines asking you a favour re the drink question regarding Half-Castes mentioned here. We are asking you why is it that we can't go into a hotel like any other respectable man. The majority of them are educated and rate payers and not savages. We don't associate with the Aborigines camps. We work hard for a living and when we want a drink such as a glass of beer we are refused; not only the drink but also from entering an hotel. We are not Aboriginals our parents are white men, so why is it we could not go into a hotel to have a glass of beer. It is not altogether fair to treat us as dogs for it is nothing but like dogs that we are treated. Hoping you will see into this affair and send us a reply as soon as you can. We remain, Yours faithfully, The Half-Castes. P.S. The majority of us pay rates such as Spring Trap License, dog License etc., and travelling in trains we dare not go to a refreshment stall for fear that we would be refused or driven away by the police and if we did not go, into gaol we would go without any delay, so see what you can do for us as we don't want to be left like a lot of cast offs. STAMP: (ABORIGINES AND FISHERIES DEPARTMENTS 1-FEB 1912)
