19 N/S 450/39 2nd October, 1939. The Acting Superintendent, Moore River Native Settlement, MOGUMBER. In reference to yours of the 25th ultimo., appar- ently Deaconess Heath was quite right in protesting in that in- stance. The ruling in the matter which was conveyed to the Lord Abbott in February, 1926, reads as follows:- "In order that there may be no trouble in future, I have instructed that no baptisms of children whose parents profess no particular faith are to take place until the in- dividual cases have been submitted to and considered by me, when the decision as to which Church is to claim them will finally rest with me as legal guardian. You can rest assured that so far as I am concerned my decision will be given in the spirit of absolute impartiality, and after due considera- tion of all the facts." I might add that as at present in practice I prefer the names of all children, Anglican or Roman Catholic, to be submitted to me for consideration when baptism is proposed. Sgd. (AOR) COMMISSIONER OF NATIVE AFFAIRS. Stamp: Card brought up to Action or Instruction 27 OCT 1939. A.C.N.A. Would the C.N.A wish to deal further with this matter on his next visit to the Settlement please ? signature 27.10.39 No, he has issued his instructions. Signature 27.10.39 Noted. Initials 27.10.39 File.
