knows that I am innocent. I don't ask for mercy. If I was guilty I deserved the sentence I got .Condon told me before I was arrested that I should fall into a trap. He told me that outside the Western Hotel; and so I did. No 2840, examined. 703. ALLEGED INNOCENCE OF No. 10454.—Whilst I was in the Perth lock-up, under remand, Detective Eggleston said to me; "I believe Dawes is innocent." He added, "We know he is innocent. I believe he will be getting out soon." That occurred about May 21st last. No. 10445, examined. 704.OFFENCE AND SENTENCE.—Uttering; two years 705. PERSONAL.—I have no complaints to make of my treatment at Fremantle, but I complain that I was kept six weeks in the lock-up at Champion Bay before trial, and previous to that I was much hampered as a ticket-of-leave man in my efforts to get honest employment. No.3229, examined. 706. OFFENCE AND SENTENCE.—Sheep stealing; 15 months. 707. PETITION.—I have not petitioned, but I would like to do so. I was sentenced on the evidence of a forged receipt. OFFENCE AND SENTENCE.—Assault,two months; breaking legal custody, 18 months 714. PETITION.—I want to petition. In a similar case to mine, occurring at Fremantle, the man was let off with a caution. [Advised that he can petition in usual course.] No. 749,examined. 715. OFFENCE AND SENTENCE.—Rogue and vagabond; six months. 716. PERSONAL—I have been in prison before, but only for drinking. I am a sailor. I came out here as a passenger in the "Cuzco." I am penniless, and shall have nothing when I get out. No. 1758, examined. 717. OFFENCE AND SENTENCE.—Stealing; six months. 718. PERSONAL.—It was a first offence. I was very drunk at the time. Another man only got the the same sentence, although he had a number of previous convictions against him. [Advised that he is at liberty to petition.] No. 1816, examined. 719. OFFENCE AND SENTENCE. —Disorderly conduct; assaulting police; four months and two months 720. PERSONAL.—I certainly understood that my sentences were concurrent. The magistrate did not say they were cumulative. Now I am told that the sentences are really cumulative. No. 2018, examined. 721. OFFENCE AND SENTENCE.—Larceny; 18 months. 722. TICKET-OF LEAVE REGULATIONS. —I have had a previous sentence, and when released on ticket, was much harassed by the police. 723. MEDICAL. —I have been well treated by the officials generally, but I suffer much from dyspepsia and need a change of food, which the doctor will not order for me. No. 1591, examined. 724. OFFENCE AND SENTENCE.—Stealing a bicycle; two years. 725. PERSONAL.—I got a much severer sentence than other men for the same offence. I am not a habitual criminal. No. 2119. examined. 726. OFFENCE AND SENTENCE.—Assaulting police; 12 months. 727. PERSONAL. —I assaulted a policeman at Niagara. The man was in plain clothes I did not know that he was an officer of the law. He was only in a shirt and trousers. (The Commission adjourned.) MONDAY, DECEMBER 12TH, 1898. [AT FREMANTLE GAOL.] Present: Mr. E. W. MAYHEW, Acting Chairman, Mr Jas. Gallop, and the Secretary. No 3580, examined. 728. OFFENCE AND SENTENCE.—Forgery; 12 months. 729.PERSONAL.—It is my first offence. I was guilty. I would like to petition to get my sentence reduced. I am 20 years of age, and a printer by trade.[Advised that he can petition.] No 10463, examined. 730. OFFENCE AND SENTENCE.—Larceny; 10 years. 731. PERSONAL.—I am a China man. I was an indented servant, and stole certain articles from my employer. I admitted the theft, but consider that I got a severe sentence on insufficient evidence. George Dimock, a Warder, examined. 732. PERSONAL.—Entered the service July 19th, 1890. Have been in the army. Had no previous experience as a warder. Am principal warder in charge of the works department. 733. PAY.—£134 a year. 734. TRADE.—Bricklayer and mason, 735. RULES AND REGULATIONS.—I take my instructions from the Superintendent daily. There are no written rules for my guidance. 736. SUGGESTIONS.—I think the tools used by prisoners should be modernised, and the old tools should be condemned. I think it would be better if I were permitted by the rules of the service to show the men how the work should be done properly, but I am not supposed, under the rules, to do this.
