fire to which our Ships repd. Went along fire trenches to Guns on right. Enemys rifle fire pretty hot & smell from unburied dead very unpleasant. Two Battalions of Naval Bd. landed about 7 p.m. very young fellows. Too young. We have fired to date nearly 5000 rounds from our 9 Guns in action but I fear done little good. Pathetic to see dead brought in & examined for disc & trinkets at Hopt's on Beach. Lieut Hodgson 5th Batt. was dangerously wounded today he has been acting as F.G.O. for Navy since we landed & done excellent work. The steep slopes of the Hill sides & nullahs above the beach are honey combed with "Dug outs". [Page] 9
