MINARET. During in the Afternoon PHILLIPS & CADDYS Batty engaged Enemy Battery which had come into action at end of MONASHES Valley & knocked them out. received letter from wife. ALBION went ashore at KABA TEPE but after an exciting 2 hours & a good deal of firing she got off. May 24th. Today a truce or cessation of Arms was arranged. I took advantage to make a complete reconnaissance of our position ( & the NZ.) from right to left to see if I could improve the position of any of my Guns but could not & Bgd.Gen Cunliffe Owen, the C.R.A. agrees that he also cannot offer any suggestions to better them. I have however ordered alternative emplacements to enable one more of BROWNES & all of PHILLIPS Guns to bear on KABA TEPE & ground East of same including OLIVE GROVE. The ground in front of PHILLIPS Batty is like a ploughed field with Enemy Shell fire, & it is only from the fact that he is false crested [Page] 45
