fleet of Destroyers took up a position off coast & proceeded to bombard MAIDOS. It was really awful to see her huge guns belching fire in lumps & smoke. She was spotted for by Baloon from Baloon Ships off Cape NEBRUNESI. Turks shelled her with Field guns. they might as well throw marbles at her. (the Battleship) June 26th Much better today. Went rounds of Inspection my Gun emplacements & observation stations &[ ] site for 5" Howitzer Battery. Beach heavily shelled again about 6 p.m. from OLIVE GROVE but very few casualties. Heard yesterday dear old Colonel Ryan had died at LEMNOS from dysentery. Received about 10 letters this last 3 days from England & Australia June 27th Destroyers were shelling enemy intermittently during night - heavy musketry fire about 5 a.m. this morning & many casualties from shell fire along the beach at various times during the day. G.O.C. accompanied me on my visit to Burgess & HUGHES Batteries. 3rd F. A. Bd HQs & Howitzer Btty 5" I afterwards witnessed the latter Batty registering Targets Lent JUPP (Capt) to maintain Baty to take Sectn on account of two of their officers being wounded. June 28th Much better today. Went with Gen CUNLIFFE OWEN to HQs 3rd F. ART. Bde to show him position of Howitzer [ ] 5" & also to arrange [Page] 66
