May 22nd Wet day. bad visibility. Fairly quiet night. To G.O.C. 8th Infty Bde in afternoon May 23rd Fine day. Went round with G.S.O.2 MORCHIES - VAULX line of defence inspecting posts & wires. fairly satisfactory. The Boche again bombarding 60 pdrs. Batt. near here & also 6" How Batt in VAULX wood. May 24th Beautiful day. very clear 'X' About 2 am this morning we discharged Gas by projector bombardment on REINCOURT & into Boche lines in front. It appeared to be successful. (950 Bombs thrown) there was little retaliation & little movement or M.G. fire from the Boche today or even Artillery fire. Stretchers were seen very busy too in the enemy lines & motor wagons. Visited G.O.C. 14th Infy. Bde. at NOREIUL Gen BIRDWOOD called about 1 pm I told him of the difficulties with the Artillery, especially Heavies of the short shooting etc & asked again that our Div Art should be relieved as soon as possible. Gen GOUGH G.O.C. Vth Army called & had tea with us - in afternoon I have sent in about 50 names for immediate honors & rewards in connection with fighting done since we have been here. [Page] 52.
