July 2nd beautiful day. Left RUBEMPRE at 7.15 a.m. for Rifle Range near THEIPVAL to act as referee in the Div Competition in Tactical field firing exercises one Coy. from each Bde competed viz. 32nd Bn 55th & 57th Bns the 57th won the competition. Gen BIRDWOOD was present during the day. the competition was a great success. July 3rd beautiful day. 'X' Poor Maj Gen HOLMES Comdg 4th Aust Div. was killed by a random shell yesterday morning while showing Mr HOLMAN Premier of N.S.W MESSINES Ridge from what was considered a perfectly safe place on HILL 63 opposite I went by Car to the funeral left at & returned at Funeral from No 2 C.C.S. at TROIS ARBRES. July 4th fine day. threatening in morning, beautiful afternoon Went to CORBIE to hear address by Chaplain Archdeacon WARD on the evils of promiscous sexual intercourse & especially dealing with Venereal disease by Lieut Col TEBBUT 14 F. Amb. the latter very good but I took strong exception to Archdeacons remarks about Australians on the way they were thought & spoken of by British (English or Imperial) Officers & English people & about his remarks of having to Kowtow to people & told him so I also corrected some of his statements in this respect by speaking to the men.
