who is the man I have asked for got leave to visit Calais to see Factories had Tea at 1st Anzac. Saw Spencer Brown there Nov. 10th Wet wretched day & night Canadians attacked N of PASCHENDAELE this morning at 6.5. am & got all their objectives heavy fighting all day. Conditions owing to the weather must be awful. Inspected the 14th Infy. Bde & M.G. Coy on the march (near Ballieul) from BERQUIN to LOCRE.(satisfactory 53rd Bn best.) Then went to see G.O.C. 14th Infy Bde at BERQUIN about defence & distribution of troops in new line we are taking over - also about conduct of O/C. 54 Bn Sports & recreation for the Winter etc. Mervyn returned from 1st Anzac School. Nov. 11th Squally. Closed D.H.Qs at SCOTTISH CAMP & opened at BAILLIEUL at noon. D.H.Q in large Town House belonging to a mining magnate has been rather a swagger place in its time but in pretty bad state now what with occupation by our Troops (it was last July H.Qs. of 2nd Anzac) & the bombing of the Boche. Nov. 12th fine day. With G.S.O.1 I visited G.O.C. 14th Infy. Bde. at KEMMEL, then to A/G.O.C. (L'. Col Toll) 8th Infy. Bde. near RAVELSBURG In afternoon visited with Prof. MAUSS a large Vinery in BAILLEUL where huge quantities of grapes are grown all the year round in immense hot Houses. The Bosche shells & bombs have however interfered considerably with the industry. [Page] 128
