Afterwards saw 3 prisoners convicted by F.G.C.M. for desertion had already commuted their sentences from P.S. to I.H.L. & reduced periods - promised to recommend suspension of sentences on their promise to reform. These men & the men dealt with yesterday are all practically first offenders & have had long lengths of service. X Boche attack on French on a Grand scale & 5 mile front. CHATEAU THIERRY & E of RHEIMS to MARTON LE HEREUX commenced at 4 am. this morning after 3 hrs bombardment news up to 4 pm. French had practically held their ground. July 16th heavy thunder storms early steamy hot oppressive day fair vis. Very busy Office work all day. good news of French & Amercian (sic) resistance against the new Boche attack E. & W. of REIMS. July 17th Fine day, good vis. Heavy Artillery fire on right of Aust Corp. (French) In morning to 15th Inf Bde School to see N.C.Os. & men going to 58th Div to act as instructors. I inspected & addressed them. I also saw Officers N.C.Os. & men from 58th Div at 15th Bde School for instruction in Scouting & Patrol work & addressed them. I afterwards inspected work going on at 14th Bde School. Went to 14th & 15th Infy. Bde. H.Qs & saw both G.Os.C. in connection with proposed minor operations. 30
