on Monday 7 We came in sight of St Paul's a desolate rock of an island, rather more than half way to the Swan A party went on shore consisting of Mr. Harris and his son Wm, Lenox, Mr. Shenton, Mr. C Clarkson & Mr. Coldstock. The natural eagerness with which land is greeted by us dwellers of the vasty deep speedily subsided in anxiety for the adventurers, especially when we understood that in all probability they would not be able to return the same night. No one could settle to any employment that evening Mrs. Harris has two girls and Bessy only lay down on the cabin of the former. I felt so desolate and fidgetty that I crept away, and tried to sleep away the time. In the morning the Captain [Page 22]
