to us like the land of shadows - beautiful & beloved, but abandoned for ever, and yet how many dear ones have we left behind It does not always do to think of this. We had an alarm yesterday poor Blythe Len's pet Greyhound, fell overboard how I can scarcely imagine - two of the Sailors jumped over for her It was fortunately a dead calm and she was returned to us quite uninjured We are collecting our property books &c &c - Bessy and I have been very busy with Phoebe's gown It looks so nicely she will really be a princess in it We shall put the finishing touch to it this morning. You would smile at the next employment which we propose to ourselves Monday 21 January Almost a calm I cannot describe the feeling of anxiety and trepi- [Page 29]
