parts am afraid some of our own men were hit by our ships guns. Snipers of whom many are inside our lines hidden in bushes are doing a lot of damage.

Our own guns are now ashore & some of them got into position are paying Turks back in their own coin.

Wednesday 28th. Got word 3rd Bgde reorganising on beach, boiled my first dixy of tea alongside a dead fellow this morning since Saturday night. Then went onto beach where I joined what were there of Batn. May. Sunday 2nd. Thurs & Friday camped on steep slopes running down to shore where every one had to burrow in to shelter from bursting shell. Men kept dribbling in but our casualties are very heavy for Bgde. Heard on Friday there were 176 killed 900 odd wounded & 700 odd missing of whom many will yet turn up & remainder may be put down as dead or prisoners. Our Coy have only two Officers left Major Denton, Capt Croly, Leuts Walker wounded & Leut Reed missing of Batn. Capt Annear & Barnes dead & Lieut Cook dead. Sgts Allen & Thompson & Pte Whittle all of Geraldton are dead & several others wounded.

Had couple of days spell on beach & then came up here into the firing line on right flank where there is practically [Page 12]
